Hierarchical linear models in education sciences: an application
The importance of hierarchical structured data analysis, based on appropriate statistical models, is very well known in several research areas. In this paper we describe an application in Education Sciences: we have students grouped in classes belonging to schools, which in turn are scattered throughout the country. This grouped organization is labelled as a hierarchical or multilevel structure, and the models usually adopted for statistical analysis of this kind of data are hierarchical linear or multilevel models. The development of these models takes into account data variability within and among the hierarchical levels. We apply a hierarchical linear model (HLM) with two levels – students and schools – in order to identify relevant differences in student performance (10th grade high school in 2004/2005), considering three scientific subjects and comparing two different regions of Portugal: Coastal and Inland
de RegoThe break with the classical conceptualization of art, questioning the concept of ‘sublime’ - in
which there was a lowering of values, from eternity to embodiment - brings us to the grotesque and
what is meant by art, beautiful and, consequently, its opposite.
With this article, we intend to find out how the grotesque is spread through the paintings of Paula
Rego and the writings of Adília Lopes and if what the painter commented about Adília’s work, and
her own artistic productions, using the epithet “grotesque beautiful” and having “a lot of
tenderness”, is verifiable.
The main postulates on the grotesque were produced by Mikhail Bakhtin, Wolfgang Kayser and
Victor Hugo. In addition to the productions of each one of the creators, the crossing of both
authors was also observed in the book “Obra”, an anthology of Adília Lopes, with images by Rego
The film "The Golden Cage": reflections on the massive return of Portuguese emigration and the 'portugalidade’ of an (increasingly less) golden cage
The story of a couple of Portuguese migrants in France hit in the summer of 2013, the record ratings in theaters. The film "The Golden Cage" by Ruben Alves, recovered the theme of Portuguese emigration, at a time when this reached the boom recorded in the 1960s. Filmmaker refers to ‘portugalidade’ as an alleged 'belonging to Portugal', using his own route, which named as a cliché, and uses multiple stereotypes in a humorous way by which some shame that the children of immigrants feel toward their parents , as well as contrasts with the society they live in is shown. The great fiction in the film is the anticipation of the return to the country of origin, fulfilling the dream of subverting the logic: in the film, there are not the parents that returns back, but the children, who apparently aren’t identified with the country of progenitors. The film sparked the debate about emigration, taking advantage of the economic crisis to reflect on his return in force as well as the profiles of new migrants. Did the Portuguese in the ‘diaspora’ still rekindle the 'Lusitanian' flame (Gonçalves, 2009)? And is the sharing of the name ‘Portugal’ enough just to highlight an alleged national identity (Sobral, 2012)?(undefined
Reasons and possible constraints resulting from the lack of an aggregating concept for the theme of "media education"
Although one of the investigation trends in “Media Education” go towards the creation of a conceptual framework for media literacy surgery, there isn’t an aggregate concept to define this area. There are several denominations who apparently intended to mean the same thing. With this article it is intended to answer the question: Why isn’t there a single definition to describe “Media Education”? In addition, it is also expected to contribute to an explanatory framework for the existence of this situation, moving forward with any reasons. The aim is also to observe if it sets up a potential embarrassment for the field is stated in terms of research
In this article we set out to show how ‘Portugality’, a term coined under the Estado Novo (New State) regime, peppers the construction of lusophony, which is a postcolonial concept. Though it is said that all that remains is to put it into practice, the concept of lusophony is not consensual since it has been interpreted in various ways. It is viewed from the standpoint of Portuguese centrality, with the reconstruction of narratives from the former empire, or via lusotropicalism, or from the perspective of a history of resentment. Even though Portuguese political discourse forms the link between ‘Portugality’ and lusophony, albeit residually, we conclude that when associated the two concepts are incompatible. This is because they always refer to a Portuguese centrality that cannot be reconciled with a postcolonial rationale of interculturality.
The light associated with the idea of truth, enhances the actual living of it and reflects it in different tones. Platão (”Alegoria da Caverna” [Cave Allegory]) observed that the cave corresponded to the visible world and the sun to the fire whose light projected into it. For Nietzsche 'truth' was a point of view; Umberto Eco prefers the lies (Eco, 2015). José Saramago ( Ensaio sobre a cegueira [Blindness]) uses many metaphors to explain how people are becoming more and more blind in the contemporary world. There are therefore various realities, all of them socially constructed (Berger & Luckmann, 1999). The previous world’s view, too primary, if it didn’t exclude God, interpreted the notions of "Heaven" and "Hell" as consequences of human actions themselves (Mattoso, 2012). The truth is that despite the announced death of God, uncertainty and emptiness still reactivate old and new spiritualities (Lipovetsky, 2007). What then means the truth today? Does the light illuminate reality? Can the excess of light cause blindness? Is there a parallel world created by concealment of light? Does the media world with its agenda setting and framing , exclude most of reality? These are reflections that will be dealt with in this article.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A dispersão,
Relacionamos as
(1997), Hall (1998), Bhabha (1998), Riggs (2000) e Morier-
Genoud & Cahen (2013), chegando ao caso português e à ideia
de lusofonia. A interculturalidade, que promove a interpenetração
identitária, está patente na diáspora? O que acontece quando se
associa a diáspora à “portugalidade”?
What is the meaning of “Diaspora” in the times of globalization? The controversial relationship between Empire, Lusophony and “portugalidade”
Publicado em "Colonialisms, post-colonialisms and lusophonies: proceedings of the 4th International Congress in Cultural Studies". ISBN 978-989-98219-2-7What is the meaning of Diaspora today? Has the
notion of dispersion associated with the origin of the concept, a
meaning in the times of globalization? Is there only one or several
Diasporas? With this article we intend to observe the evolution
of the concept of Diaspora based in the idea of Said (1994) who
argues that the end of colonialism did not stop imperialism. We
connected the problematizations made on the Diaspora, among
others, by Cohen (1997), Hall (1998), Bhabha (1998), Riggs (2000)
and Morier-Genoud & Cahen (2013), to the Portuguese case and
the idea of Lusophony. Is interculturality, which promotes identity
interpenetration, reflected in Diaspora? What happens when
combining Diaspora with “portugalidade”? Eduardo Lourenço
(1999) is ironic about the idea of Diaspora, claiming that that is
an abnormality that our long emigrant history will be perceived
as such. And, even if one starts from the idea that “meaning is
use” (Wittgenstein, 1958), the ‘naturalization’ of certain realities,
ideologically aligned can increase misunderstandings and prevent
an ethical dimension, which happens when the ‘other’ comes into
play (Eco, 1997)
disseminado o slogan “Portugal do Minho a Timor”
destinado a combater os movimentos independentistas
que lá emergiam, defendendo a pertença desses
territórios a Portugal.
The coining of the word ‘Portugality’ [‘portugalidade’]
is identified as having taken place between
the 50 and 60 decades of the twentieth century, being
a ‘Estado Novo’ (dictatorship period, between 1928-
1974) product. That dynamic was underlined after
the repeal, in 1951, of the ‘Colonial Act’, where the
colonies would be called as overseas provinces and
the slogan “Portugal form Minho to Timor” was disseminated,
to combat the independence movements
that emerged, defending that territories belonged to
Portugal. It was in 1947, with the publication of the
booklet In Defense of Portugality [Portugalidade],
wroten by Alfredo Pimenta, that for the first time,
someone studied specifically the ‘portugality’ [‘portugalidade],
discussing its meaning and typifying the
concept. After a hiatus in its use, following the ‘Carnation Revolution’ (April, 1974), in which there was
a distance from certain subjects that were characteristic
of the Estado Novo, the term is being reintroduced
into the lexicon, but it does not escape to
the Luso-Tropicalist ideology in which it was forged
(Ferronha, 1969), causing several misunderstandings.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
